There are so many beautiful fabrics out there that can be made into pillowcases to transform a room by adding a splash of colour to contrast with, or match your decor. I don't think that a nursery is complete without a cushion propped up against the breastfeeding chair. Hence, pillowcases are today's tutorial.
Pillowcases can be made from pretty much any fabric you like and can be any shape or size. You can add buttons, tassels, piping or cord as embellishments but a plain pillowcase can also be beautiful. Today we are starting off with a quick and simple project. I'll show you two different styles of envelope pillowcases. In the coming weeks, I'll endeavour to share with you other, more complex styles in other tutorials.
What you will need:
- Cushion insert
- Fabric (+ a contrasting fabric if doing binding)
- Coordinating thread
Self Binding Pillowcase
1. Cut a square of fabric 2" bigger than your cushion insert (so if your cushion insert is a 14" square, cut a 16" square from your fabric). Then cut two rectangles one 1/3 of the length of your cut square + 1" and the other 2/3 of the length + 1" and both same width (so to the 14" insert, you will cut one 6 x 16" rectangle and another 12 x 16" rectangle).
2. Take each of the small rectangles and create a hem on one of the long edges by folding 1/4", pressing flat, folding 1/2", pressing and stitching in place.
3. Position fabric as follows; large square right side up, large rectangle right side down (position so that the hem is facing the middle of the cushion and line the exposed edge up with the large square) and small rectangle right side down (this will overlap with the large rectangle, position so hem is facing middle of cushion and exposed edge lines up with large square).
4. Stitch all the way around the border using a 1/4" seam.
5. Trim corners and turn in the right way.
You can also try using a panel fabric on the front for effect and change up the fabrics on the back!
Pillowcase with Binding
A spin on this pillow is to add a binding using a contrasting fabric. Also quick and simple project with an effective finish!
1. Repeat steps 1 and 2 above.
2. Position fabric as follows; large square right side down, small rectangle right side up (position so that the hem is facing the middle of the cushion and line the exposed edge up with the large square) and large rectangle right side up (this will overlap with the large rectangle, position so hem is facing middle of cushion and exposed edge lines up with large square).
3. Stitch all the way around the border using a 1/4" seam.
4. Make and attach binding (the same as for binding a quilt)
Beautiful! Two versions of the same pillow that will transform your nursery!
