Growing up, we never had Christmas stockings, so I never really understood the appeal until I met my husband. Their family would get so excited on Christmas morning, looking at the presents inside their stocking (they were only ever little bibs and bobs, but entertaining nonetheless). This excitement is something that we really want to pass on to our kids, hence, the making of my first Christmas stocking! Again, it is a very simple project which I threw together during one of Sam's naps. You could, if you wanted, make it more detailed by adding different materials, quilting the front, embroidering a name or including different focal pieces (baubles, buttons, bows etc).
What you will need:
50cm Christmas print
6cm coordinating Christmas print
70cm coordinating plain fabric (for the lining, if desired)
Co-ordinating thread

First, download our 1 page pattern HERE for free. Print at 220% to achieve full size. If you would like the stocking to be a different size, simply change the magnification you print it at.
1. Cut out pattern pieces A and B.
2. Place piece A on your Christmas print and cut the stocking front. Now, flip the pattern over (mirror image) and cut the stocking back. Repeat using the coordinating plain fabric to create the lining. Now, cut 2 x Piece B from the coordinating plain fabric, along with a 2" strip from the coordinating Christmas print and an additional 2" strip from the Christmas print (this only needs to be 6" long).
3. Place the stocking front and one piece of lining, wrong sides together, and pin. Repeat with the stocking back and remaining piece of lining.
4. Place the stocking front and back (with adjoining lining), right sides together and pin. Sew in place, using a 1/4" seam.
**Ensure that you do not sew across the top of the stocking (this is the opening)
5. Place the Piece B's, wrong sides together and sew across the longer edge, using a 1/4" seam.
6. Create binding from both the 2" strips, by folding it in half and iron flat. Open it out, then fold the edges into the centre fold and iron in place. Take the small, 6" strip, ONLY, fold it in half again and press (the fabric should have 3 folds in total). Stitch strip together, by sewing as close to the edge as possible (see picture).
7. Attach the coordinating Christmas print binding, to the un-sewn, exposed edge of piece B, using a 1/4" seam.
**Hint: To achieve a nice, flat edge, pin in place first and then sew.
8. Place Piece B onto the exposed edge of the stocking, which should still be inside out. Place the beginning of Piece B halfway between the stocking seams and then pin it in place (the end of Piece B should overlap the beginning of Piece B).
9. BEFORE sewing, create the hook for the stocking to hang, by taking the small, 2'' strip and folding it in half so that the ends meet. Place the exposed edge of both ends, against the exposed edge of the stocking. It should be placed in between the stocking and Piece B, and over the seam of the stocking that aligns with the heel. Pin in place.
10. Attach Piece B and the stocking hook, to the stocking, using a 1/4" seam.
11. Turn in the right way, pushing out the seams and iron flat. Take the buttons and sew in place along the edge of Piece B (I stitched the button thread through both layers of Piece B).
Ta-da. Now you have a beautiful stocking of your own!! Here is some more gorgeous inspiration for you!
