How to Attach Bias Binding

This week, we are going to look at attaching the bias binding that we made in previous tutorial to our almost finished Muslin Wraps. This series of bias binding tutorials will conclude next post when we look at Finishing Bias Binding.

To attach your binding;
1. Place your open bias fold to the edge of your fabric. This will mean that the right side of the bias will be pinned to the wrong side of the fabric. Leave a tail of fabric (about 2 inches long).

2. Sew along the fold using a straight stitch.

3. Flip so that the right side of the fabric is facing upwards and iron the bias flat. Then fold over the bias. The trick is to ensure that this row of stitching catches the back of the bias is make sure that this row of stitching is above the initial row. To do this iron the top edge of the bias slightly over the stitching row. This also has the added bonus of keeping everything straight!

5. Sew the top edge of the bias onto the right side of the fabric similar to a top stitch.

Tips for attaching binding to curves;
- iron the bias to the curve that is to be sewn. This ensures a neat finish.
- rather than aligning the bias with the edge of the fabric, try overlapping it. You will need to pin it to hold it in place and then attach by sewing down the first pressed fold.
- when attaching the bias to the front, try pulling the bias gently as you sew so that it won't bunch up where it curves.

Binding can look so fantastic and really finishes off a piece neatly. Keep your eye out for the next post where we will complete our Muslin Wraps!
