Buttons & Booties: Finishing Bias Binding

Finally, we are going to finish the Muslin Wraps we started a few weeks ago. So far, we have cut out the Muslin Wrap and attached the bias. Today, we are going to finish the bias and this will conclude this series of tutorials. Finishing the bias is relatively simple, step 3 can be a little confusing, but try to push through! It will be worth it. Bias binding is a beautiful finish for any garment and is worth the extra effort.

1. Ensure that you leave a long tail of fabric (about 2") at beginning and end of attaching the bias to your garment.

2. Fold back the bias so that it meets in the middle of the gap. Iron in a crease or mark with chalk on both folds. Tip: leave a small gap between the folds, otherwise the end product might be a little too big.

3. This can be the confusing part. Unfold the bias and match the marks/creases as shown below (diagonally fold the bias on the bottom upwards, then pin along this line, marks should then match). Sew on the diagonal across the fabric in the correct direction.
