Building on the basics again today. We are going to make another cute baby bib. Similar to the Dual Panel Bib, this bib is a simple and quick pattern, taking about 30 minutes to make.
The Vintage Bib is a smaller, more feminine bib, complete with frills. Multiple bibs can be made in one sitting and a fat quarter is all the fabric required, making it a perfect afternoon project. Have fun mixing it with the variations shown at the end of the tutorial. Download the pattern here.
1. From the fat quarter, cut panels A, B and C. You will also need to cut two 14 x 2" strips for the frills and two 10 x 1.5" strips for the tie backs.
2. Fold the 14 x 2" strips in half, wrong sides together and iron. Using panel A, match the midpoint of the panel to midpoint of strip, straight raw edges together and pin.
3. Focusing on the strip, gather the fabric and pin. Repeat until finished. Ensure the strip is flush with the edge of the panel. To avoid breaking the needle on your machine, sew VERY SLOWLY, down the raw edges, using a 1/4" seam.
4. Repeat steps 4 - 6 using panel B and the second strip.
5. Place panels A and C, wrong side together, matching straight edges. Attach, using a 1/4" seam. Ensure the seam extends far enough to cover the existing stitching. Iron the seam flat.
6. Repeat step 6 using panels B and C.
**If you want to add buttons to the front of the bib, now is the time to do so.
7. Use the front panel cut a bib back and chenille towelling middle.
8. Place the bib front and chenille towelling together. Join using a 1/4" seam.
8. Fold remaining two strips in half, right sides together and iron flat. Sew raw edges and one end together, using a 1/4" seam. Using a safety pin, turn the strips in the right way. Place the open end of both strips on the bib front, where indicated on the pattern and attach using a 1/4" seam. Pin in centre of bib.
9. Place bib front and bib back, right sides together. Sew around the edge, using a 1/4" seam but make sure you leave a 2" gap to turn the bib in the right way.
10. Trim the excess fabric. Turn the bib in the right way, remove pins and iron flat.
11. Use a simple slip stitch to finish off.
Ta-da. All done. Try mixing up the materials, adding in buttons or changing the frills. Feel free to comment below if you have any tips, questions or suggestions.
