Inspiration
First off. Where to go for your inspiration. There are plenty of books that detail the makings of toys as well as many craft magazines. Your local quilting store or Spotlight also have DIY toy packs for sale for a reasonable price as well as examples on display. The online world has a never-ending supply of inspiration. Try sites like Pinterest or Etsy, Google images is another good option as well as DIY sewing blogs such as Buttons & Booties!
Fabric Toys
These are so cute. Fabric toys are my favourite as they are completely customisable. Any print or fabric type will work and it can be combined as a patchwork or effectively layered. Patterns for these toys are simple to read and easy to follow. Sites such as Pinterest have links to free PDF patterns. Etsy also has patterns available but for a small cost.
These are some of my favourite. The patterns can be found by following the link below the photo.

I've also made a couple of soft toys using kits from Spotlight.
Knitted and Crocheted Toys
This is another gorgeous option if you know how to either knit or crochet. Patterns for these toys are little more complex and require extra concentration but are definitely worth it. I am yet to learn the art of both knitting and crocheting but believe me grandma has these toys covered for marble!!
